Retailing innovation in Coimbatore
Posted On: 02-06-2008 09:10:16 AM

A report in the Hindu Business line talks of an innovative retail approach taken by Abdul Kather, a vegetable vendor. He offers buyers 3.5 kg packs of (assorted) vegetables for Rs 20. In these days of escalating prices, he has customer queuing up to buy from him. Abdul started this business 15 years ago and today runs a fleet of eight vegetable vans that do business in Coimbatore as well as neighboring areas. Each of the vans is loaded with three tonnes of vegetables which he buys from the mandi and from farmers with whom he has contracted directly. Abdul and his team sort the vegetables and pack eight different items in each bag, each of which weighs 3.5 kg and is sold for Rs 20. The potential buyer collects tokens in the evening before the delivery. This allows Abdul to know how many packs are required the next day. In the morning the token holder pays the Rs 20/- and takes the bag of vegetables from the mobile van. The buyer can also opt for individual items. The rate of vegetables such as carrot, brinjal, beans, radish, onions, cabbage etc are displayed. He ends up selling 300 to 400 packs a day apart from the sale of loose vegetables.
