Amazon has appointed former Citibanker Sriraman Jagannathan as Vice President to lead its payments business indicating its imminent entry into one of the most competitive segments for consumer internet companies in India.

Jagannathan, an IIT Delhi and IIM-Ahmedabad graduate who was until recently the chief digital officer at IDFC Bank, will be one of three vice presidents within Amazon India, the other two being country head Amit Agarwal and category management head Samir Kumar.

Jagannathan brings with him a rich experience of 27 years. He started his career at Citibank in 1989. He moved from there in March 1992 to join NICL South (joint venture between Citibank and MGF at that time), a BPO enterprise that outsourced collection activity of Citibank. The experience gave him a rich experience in setting up a company from scratch. In 1994 he came back to Citibank as Securitisation Head. In July 1997 he was appointed as Treasurer at Citicorp Maruti Finance Limited (Joint Venture Company between Citibank and Maruti Suzuki) a position that he held concurrently with his role as Treasurer. In February 2000 he was appointed as eBusiness Head at Citibank, and in 2005 he was appointed ebusiness head at Citifinancial Japan with a mandate to grow the virtual channels and drive new customer growth via internet and Automated Loan Machines. In 2007 he became ebusiness head at Citibank Japan. Then n January 2010 he moved to Bharti Airtel Ltd as CEO mCommerce and was responsible for launching Airtel Money . Almost 4 years later, In September 2014, he moved to IDFC Bank as Chief Digital & Data Officer. He joined the newly licensed bank to define and drive the digital and data strategy. Just over a year later he quit to join Amazon.
