Subrata Dutta, the CEO of Fabindia, has put in his papers and is likely to be re-joining his earlier company Samsonite in an overseas assignment (grapevine news). Dutta who joined Fabindia in 2013 as COO and was promoted to CEO in a year is credited with helping the company grow aggressively on the back of its first ever media advertising campaign. At Fabindia, Dutta was reporting in to Wiliam Bissell, the Managing Director, and to the Board. Dutta was earlier CEO with Samsonite India.
An engineer from IIT Kanpur, Dutta started his career at CESC Limited. Two years later he took a study break and did his MBA from IIM Bangalore. In 1990 He joined Lakme Lever straight from campus and after a decade at Lakme he moved on in 2000 to Pepsi as Vice President – Fountain Business. One year later he moved to Elbee Services Limited, the courier and logistics company, as Vice President Marketing. One year at Elbee and he moved again as Vice President Sales and Marketing at Wimco Limited for the match business in India. He was with Wimco for 3 years before taking over as Business Head at the Himalaya Drug Co. in 2002 where he was responsible for consumer products (Herbal Cosmetics and Healthcare) business in India and Russia. Then in 2007 he moved as Managing Director at Samsonite which position he held till Dec 2012. At Samsonite he was responsible for the business in India, Middle East and East Africa including the exclusive retail business as also management of the global sourcing factory in Nashik.
