Tata Starbucks' CEO Avani Davda quits

Tata Starbucks's CEO Avani Davda has quit the company three years after the coffee chain opened its first store in the country. She has been replaced by Sumi Ghosh, a Starbucks veteran, effective January 1, 2016.

Davda has been with the TATA’s since 2002. She had joined the elite Tata Administrative Services (TAS) officer after doing her MBA from Mumbai's Narsee Monjee Institute. She was the youngest CEO at TATA. She is moving on to explore other interests.

Ghosh, an eight-year Starbucks partner, last served as the Regional Vice President of Starbucks U.S. Mid-west. Prior to Starbucks Ghosh was with Aramark as Regional Vice President for 3.5 years. Aramark is the food, facilities and uniform services company that services hospitals, universities, school districts, stadiums and other businesses around the world. Ghosh spent 10 years with Yum before that holding multiple positions including Franchise business manager, Region coach, Real estate manager and Market planner.

Ghosh and his family will relocate from Chicago to Mumbai early next month. He will work with Davda till early February to ensure a smooth transition.

Tata Starbucks Pvt. Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between Starbucks Coffee Company and Tata Global Beverages, opened its first India store in October 2012 and now has 78 outlets. The company, generated total revenues of Rs 171.23 crore in the year ended March 2015. The company posted per-store sales that were more than two-and-a-half times higher than its largest rival during its second full year of operations in India, thanks to its premium pricing and locations that attract more customers.

In FY15, Tata Starbucks' loss narrowed to Rs 47 crore from Rs 51.87 crore a year ago. Over the past year, the coffee chain invested Rs 120 crore to expand India operations.
