Tapan Roychoudhury, former Head of Retail Operations at Sahara Worldwide has joined online jewelry marketing company Voylla as Head of Vice President for their offline business.
Founded in 2012, Voylla sells fashion jewellery on online marketplaces Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Jabong, Yepme and Voonik, along with its own website. The online jeweller has recently entered bricks-and-mortar retail with a tie-up with the Future Group and is also in talks with Aditya Birla retail and Reliance. The company raised $15 million from private equity firm Peepul Capital last month. The Jaipur-based company plans to open 30 retail stores in the current fiscal. Their first store has opened in Delhi in Rajouri Garden.
Roychoudhary started his career with Eureka Forbes as a Product officer in 1992. Shortly afterwards he moved overseas to the UAE as Store Manager at Splash – a Landmark Group company. He left Landmark in 1995 to join Liwa Trading Services where he grew to the position of Country Head - Kuwait in 1997 and then moved as Country Head - Doha and Qatar in 2002. He moved back to India in March 2003 as Retail Manager at Arcus ltd – India’s first large-format home-improvement chain that had opened shop in Mumbai at the time. Two years later, in Feb 2005, Roychoudhary moved to the newly launched Piramyd Retail as GM Operations. In July 2008 Roychoudhary moved again – this time as Vice President Operations to Wadhwan Lifestyle Retail Pvt. Ltd. After Wadhwan would down its retail operation, Roychoudhary operated as a retail consultant from Nov 2009 to March 2011. In April 2011 he joined Fabindia as Head of the Western Region. After 2 years with Fabindia he moved to Sahara Worldwide Ltd where he was part of the core team that was engaged in envisaging the retail footprint of the business and forming alliances with international retailers. Sadly, this business came to a standstill with the imprisonment of Subrata Roy – Founder and Chairman of Sahara India.
