High street rentals are falling

As brands go into consolidation mode and shut stores that are unprofitable, popular high streets like Mumbai's Link Road, Delhi's South Extension and Bangalore's Brigade Road have seen rentals fall by 15-18% in the first half of 2013, as per data from property consultancy firm Cushman & Wakefield. In pursuit of profitability brands are also renegotiating rentals and landlords are agreeing in a bit to retain their tenants.

Infrastructure development activities like the upcoming metro line in South Extension and the resultant traffic congestion and diversions around some of these markets have also made shopping a cumbersome task driving away brands to malls where footfalls remain high. Rental data from Cushman and Wakefield is summarized in the table below.
