Retailers such as Whole Foods Market, Nordstrom, Old Navy and Banana Republic owner Gap Inc, Anthropologie, Patagonia, Sears and Kmart have all replaced the paper shopping receipt with electronic versions.
The customers, reportedly, have shown preference for the paper-less receipt, which is either e-mailed or uploaded to password-protected Web sites, and are readily available for the tax season.
With the increasing popularity of such payment options as the cell phone, Google Wallet, online banking etc, digital receipts are now a preferred option.
The e- option for an alternative to paper receipts was considered in late 1990, but the dot-com crash suspended the initiative.
In 2005, Apple introduced electronic receipts in some of its stores, but the concept was ahead of its time and did not catch on.
