Simran Says: The rise and rise in cotton yarn prices ...
Posted On: 23-11-2010 00:00:00 10

I was reading an article recently based on the Ludhiana knitwear industry that said cotton yarn prices have gone up 2.5 to 3 times and are currently being quoted at Rs 250-290 a kg, up from Rs 105-110 a kg last year ! Cotton used to be a cheap product when I was growing up. Terry cot (polyester cotton blend) was a favored fabric owing to its non-crush and easy-care properties. Over the years, as Indians regained their national self-esteem, cotton came back into flavor. The international stature given to cotton products further pushed up demand for the category. We now see ourselves heading to a situation where cotton is not cheap anymore and the market is rapidly turning into a suppliers market. Being an agri-product, cotton production cannot be increased at the push of a button. Given the growing consumption of agricultural land for urban uses, and the consequent reduction of space for agricultural purposes, I stop to wonder about the future of the garment industry. What seems evident to me is that brands are going to have re-look at their product mix when it comes to cottons and blends. Already the premium menís wear brands are focusing heavily on a cotton-rich fabric (also a blend but with higher cotton component). On the other hand brands that are heavily dependant on cotton are going to find unwittingly re-positioned in the next few years owing to the incessant change in prices (3 times a year!). I can see that for a cotton loyalist like me, the future is not looking very comfortable.
