Last year 1,90,00,000 tickets were sold online by the Indian Railways of which two-thirds were for non-A/C tickets. Sales of online rail tickets are expected to touch 4,00,00,000 this year. Online shopping in India, which is still at its infancy, is gathering momentum with around 6 million transactions per annum. A recent survey conducted by MasterCard says that by 2010 India will beat Japan and Korea to take in larger online shopping revenues in the Asia Pacific region. The country will occupy the second position after China which is expected to rake in $1.4 trillion in online shopping sales. However, current statistics do not seem to support this prognosis. As per eBay, Internet penetration in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and Singapore is between 81% and 93%, whereas in China it is 21% and 4% in India. The online shopping market accounts for over 10 % of retail industry revenues in mature markets like the US, while its contribution to the Indian retail industry revenues is negligible.
